Probiotic supplement linked to death of premature infant

KEY POINT

Use of a probiotic supplement (i.e., ABC Dophilus Powder—Solgar) was linked to a fatal case of gastrointestinal (GI) mucormycosis, a rare fungal infection, in a premature infant after testing of unopened bottles revealed the product contained the mold Rhizopus oryzae.
